GHARTEY-KWANSAH RESEARCH GROUP

About Us

The Ghartey-Kwansah Laboratory (GGK Lab) focuses on infectious diseases, with an emphasis on parasitic and bacterial infections. Our primary interest lies in Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), which disproportionately affect low-income regions and present significant public health challenges. We investigate their transmission, distribution, and treatment, employing a range of advanced techniques, including molecular and computational screening methods, to advance the management of infectious diseases.

Currently, we study Leishmania and Schistosoma parasites, which impact millions worldwide, particularly in underserved regions. We conduct comprehensive parasitology studies to unravel the life cycles, pathogenic mechanisms, and host interactions of these parasites, aiming to develop improved treatments and strategies for disease elimination. Our work integrates advanced molecular biology techniques, such as PCR-based diagnostics, genotyping, and DNA sequencing, for precise identification of pathogens. To accelerate therapeutic discovery, we leverage computational approaches including molecular docking, virtual screening, and molecular dynamics simulations to identify potential antibiotic compounds of natural products origin that can disrupt parasite survival and proliferation. We aim to enhance treatments, deepen understanding, and contribute to global efforts in disease control and elimination.

Collaboration and Opportunities

We believe in the power of collaboration. The GGK Lab welcomes partnerships with fellow researchers, students, and institutions passionate about making strides in parasitology and biomedical sciences. If you're interested in joining our lab or collaborating on a project, please contact us or visit our department at the University of Cape Coast.
